BOWIE, Md. – The Penn State baseball team dropped a 9-0 decision at Georgetown on Tuesday at Prince George's Stadium. The Nittany Lions snapped their six-game win streak.
Penn State is now 23-22 overall while Georgetown improved to 28-19.
Tommy Molsky made his 10th start of the season for the Nittany Lions, going three innings and pitched to two batters in the fourth. Molsky allowed five runs on eight hits. He struck out four batters and walked one. Ryan Partridge gave up four runs on two hits before Carson Kohls took over on the mound.
Kohls pitched three shutout innings, giving up just one hit and two walks, while striking out one. Chad Rogers entered to begin the seventh and threw two shutout innings. Rogers struck out a career-best four batters and gave up just one hit.
Collin Garner got the start for Georgetown, throwing four scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and a walk, while striking out two. Andrew Williams, Anthony Redfern, Marshall Whitmer, Michael Willis and Kyle Salley closed out the game, combining for five shutout frames and five strikeouts.
Penn State reached base on two hits and six walks. Ben Kailher and Johnny Piacentino each had a base hit and a walk. Matt Wood snapped his 26-game hit streak, but drew a walk in the eighth to reach base in 27-straight games.
During the 26-game streak, Wood batted .469 (45-of-96) with eight doubles, two triples and four homers. He had multiple hits in 15 of the 26 games. He also drew 16 walks and three hit-by-pitches during that stretch.
The Hoyas recorded nine runs on 12 hits. Jake Hyde collected three hits, including a double, with two runs and two RBI. Andrew Ciufo and Ethan Stern each had two hits, two runs and an RBI.
Georgetown got on the board with three runs in the third. With one out and a runner on second, Hyde sent a line drive to right for a single to score Ciufo from second. After Hyde moved up to second on a wild pitch, a bloop single to left by Stern drove in Hyde. Three batters later, Tony Barreca hit a groundball up the middle for a single to plate Stern. The Hoyas led 3-0 through three innings.
The Hoyas plated six runs in the fourth. A double to right-center by Ciufo drove home Cam Meyer before a double to right by Hyde scored Ciufo. A bases-loaded walk plated Hyde. On a double play, Stern scored from third. Owen Carapellotti followed with a single to right to plate Ubaldo Lopez. Georgetown led 9-0 after four.
The Nittany Lions threatened to score in the eighth. Cole Bartels led off the inning with a walk. Wood followed with his own walk, leaving alone a 3-2 pitch above the letters. A deep fly ball to center by Josh Spiegel pushed Bartels to third. However, a pop out to second and a strikeout ended the inning and left the runners on base.
Penn State heads to Columbus, Ohio for a three-game series with Ohio State next weekend, beginning on Friday, May 13.
