UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Softball (17-4) rallied on Saturay to defeat Canisius, 7-0.
Penn State's ace pitcher Bailey Parshall hurled a complete game shutout for the Nittany Lions allowing just one hit and striking out nine.
Both Liana Jones and Kaitlyn Morrison hit home runs for the Nittany Lions. Morrison got the scoring started with her two-run home run that left the park at dead center field. Jones followed her in the third inning sending a ball out that hugged the foul pole.
How it Happened
The Nittany Lions jumped out to an early advantage when Melody Coombs walked to begin the game and two batters later, Morrison sent a ball out of the park.
In the bottom of the second inning Jones hit a solo home run to left field to extend the Nittany Lions lead to three.
In the fourth inning, Michelle Leone and Lexie Black had back-to-back singles before Maggie Finnegan stepped to the plate. Finnegan put a ball in play that the second baseman couldn't handle and brought home Black who was on second base. During the next at bat, a ball got past the Canisius catcher and both Finnegan and Leone were able to score.
In the sixth, Morgan Farrah singled and then moved to second. Amanda Mack, who was tagged to pinch hit for Coombs, ripped a double down the left field line and was able to score Farrah from second, giving the Nittany Lions a 7-0 lead.
Bailey Parshall was able to complete the shutout in the top of the seventh, setting down Canisius in order and giving the Nittany Lions the victory.
