Women's Golf Concludes Play at Weather-Shortened Briar’s Creek Invitational

The Nittany Lions finished tied for 14th in the 17-team field

JOHN’S ISLAND, S.C.  – The Penn State women's golf team concluded play at the 12th-annual Briar's Creek Invitational on Tuesday afternoon after inclement weather on Sunday and Monday shortened the event to just 36 holes.

The Nittany Lions finished tied for 14th in the 17-team field at 35-over, 611, paced by freshman Lauren Thompstone (Paris, France) who concluded the week 5-over, 149, and in a tie for 39th position. Her 5-over score for the week is the best score relative to par of her young career.

Florida State ran away from the field finishing as the lone team under-par for the week and 14 shots clear of its closest competitor at 9-under, 567. Purdue and SMU tied for second at 5-over with Campbell finishing at 9-over and East Carolina and Tulsa rounding out the top-five in a tie for fifth at 10-over.

Thompstone went 74-75—149 en route to her best finish of the season while senior Michelle Cox (Allentown, Pa.) was the big mover of the day climbing 23 spots after carding an even-par, 72, on Tuesday to finish the week tied for 65th.

Playing as an individual, freshman Gwendolyn Powell (Madison Township, Pa.) also finished the week tied for 65th at 10-over following rounds of 75 and 79 while classmate Jiratchaya Jiratthitinun (Bangkok, Thailand) completed the week at 9-over, 153, and tied for 54th position.

Senior Drew Nienhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) went 78-77—155 while junior Myranda Quinton (Burlington, Ontario) rounded out the team scoring at 20-over for the week.

Penn State will have the next few weeks off from competition before closing the month of March at the Clemson Invitational on March 28-30.
