ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore Aiden Fink (Calgary, Alberta) was named Big Ten Hockey’s Second Star of the Week for his performances against No. 13/12 Michigan over the weekend as announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning.
Fink earns his second Big Ten weekly award of the season and the fifth of his career. Fink, who was honored as B1G Third Star on November 26, is the fifth different Nittany Lion to be recognized by the league this season joining Reese Laubach (Jan. 28), Arsenii Sergeev (Jan. 7), John Seifarth (Dec. 3), and Simon Mack (Oct. 8).
Fink’s five weekly awards are tied for the third most by a single player in Penn State history (David Goodwin ’17) and rank only behind Denis Smirnov ’20 (seven) and Peyton Jones ’20 (nine) all-time.
Fink led the Big Ten and tied for second in the nation with three goals on the weekend leading Penn State to a series split at Yost Ice Arena. He registered his fourth multi-goal game and 10th multi-point effort of the season with a pair of scores in a 5-4 victory on Friday night before adding the first shorthanded goal of his career in a loss on Saturday.
With his sixth powerplay goal of the season on Friday, Fink became the new Nittany Lion career record holder for powerplay goals with 14 in his career while his six on the season are tied for the second-most in a single-season just two shy of his own record of eight set last year.
The Calgary, Alberta native has only been held off the scoresheet five times this season while his 19 goals are tied for the fourth-most in a single-season in Penn State history. Now in eight career games against Michigan, Fink is averaging 2.00 points per game with 10 goals and six assists for 16 points.
Fink currently ranks second in the nation averaging 1.42 points per game, just .01 behind Michigan State’s Isaac Howard, while ranking third in the Big Ten and tied for third nationally with 37 points on the year. Fink’s 19 goals are also tied for third in the conference and fourth in the nation.
