Women’s basketball is set to host Washington on Wednesday, Feb. 5

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State women’s basketball concludes its three-game home stint on Wednesday, Feb. 5 when it hosts Washington. Tip off back inside the Bryce Jordan Center is set for 6 p.m. The Lady Lions are in search of their 300th program Big Ten win in Sunday’s contest.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State’s fourth quarter comeback attempt against no. 14 Maryland in Rec Hall last Wednesday fell short, leading to a 82-73 defeat.
  • After being down by 21 points in the third quarter, the Lady Lions battled back, scoring 25 and 24 points in the final two periods. PSU could not push overtop the Terrapins down the stretch, leading to the loss.
  • Gracie Merkle led the team in scoring with 24 points, her 17th time reaching double figure scoring this season.
  • Gabby Elliott helped guide the Penn State comeback attempt, scoring all 23 of her points in the second half. This was her 14th double-digit scoring outing of the year.
  • Penn State forced 23 turnovers on Maryland and produced 27 points off of those miscues.
  • The Lady Lions compiled 12 steals, freshman Talayah Walker leading the way with four.

LAST TIME AGAINST WASHINGTON

  • The Lady Lions and the Huskies have not faced since November 30, 1996.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES

  • Washington is 13-9 overall and 4-6 in the Big Ten in its first season in the conference. The Huskies have defeated Northwestern, Illinois, Wisconsin and Purdue.
  • As with the Lady Lions, Washington is on a three-game slide, losing its most recent three contests to Iowa, Indiana and Ohio State.
  • Three Huskies average double figure scoring: Sayvia Sellers (15.8), Elle Ladine (15.5) and Dalayah Daniels (11.4).
  • Sellers ranks in the top 10 in the conference in several categories including points, three point percentage, three pointers, three pointers per game and field goal percentage. Ladine is one of the Huskies’ most effective shooters from beyond, shooting 2.09 threes per game, totaling 46 threes this year and shooting at a 36.2 clip.
  • Washington has the top shooting percentage from beyond the arc in the conference (35.6) and second-best team free throw percentage in the country (78.0).
  • Last season UW finished 16-15 overall and 6-12 in the PAC 12. The Huskies lost in the first round of the conference tournament and earned a spot in the WBIT. They were a second seed while the Lady Lions were a one seed in last year’s WBIT. The Huskies lost to Georgetown in the first game.

PENN STATE – WASHINGTON SERIES

  • Penn State and Washington will face off for only the fourth time in the history of each program. PSU was ranked in the top 25 all three games.
  • This will the first meeting since 1996.

LADY LIONS IN THE RANKS

  • Merkle ranks 12th in the Big Ten in total points (337). She also sits 15th in the B1G in points per game (15.3). Merkle is fourth in the country in field goal percentage (66.2) and second in the conference. Her nine double-doubles ranks her 29th in the country and fifth in the Big Ten.
  • Moriah Murray is 12th in the country in three pointers (63) and ranks first in the Big Ten in that category. She also leads the conference in three pointers per game (2.86) and three-point attempts (160), ranking 16th and 18th nationally in those respective categories.
  • Alli Campbell is ranked fourth in the conference in assists (96).
  • Penn State is 16th in the nation in total assists (397) and sits 19tt in assists per game (18.0). The team is third in the conference in total assists and ranks fourth in assists per game.
