2013-14 (Freshman): Fennell went 16-10 in singles this spring to finish the year with 20 overall wins. He also went 1-1 in doubles... Went 5-3 in singles and 5-3 in doubles this fall, while competing at the ITA All-American Championships, Wake Forest Invite and ITA Atlantic Regional... Fennell and Russell Bader reached the doubles semifinal at the ITA Atlantic Regional, including a win against Virginia's Ryan Shane and Jordan Daigle... He combined with Matt Barry for a 6-5(4) doubles win against William & Mary... Fennell went 1-2 in his first three matches of the spring, including a win against St. John's... However, he then rattled off 10 straight wins, all at the No. 3 singles spot. The wins came against Cleveland State, UMBC, Bucknell, Binghamton, Lehigh, No. 33 VCU, Penn, No. 1 Ohio State, No. 50 Princeton and No. 47 South Florida... He won five matches in Big Ten play, coming against the Buckeyes, No. 28 Northwestern, No. 70 Wisconsin, No. 63 Nebraska and Iowa... He defeated No. 50 UNC Wilmington's Sam Williams, 6-4, 6-1, in the NCAA Tournament First Round... Fennell clinched the match point five times for Penn State.
Junior Career: Fennell, a Bala Cynwyd, Pa., native, was rated as a five-star recruit and the 22nd-best recruit in the country by Tennisrecruiting.net. He combined with Christian Lutschaunig to give Penn State two of the top three prospects in Pennsylvania, according to Tennisrecruiting.net. The two combined to win a gold ball at the USTA Men's Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The Lower Merion High School alum also reached the quarterfinals at the USTA Spring National Championships.
