Seifarth Shines as Men's Hockey Downs Colgate, 3-2

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Junior goaltender John Seifarth (Pittsburgh, Pa.) stood tall between the pipes in his first NCAA Division I start leading Penn State to a 3-2 victory over Colgate in non-conference action on Tuesday evening inside Pegula Ice Arena. Seifarth was part of the Penn State Ice Lions ACHA club hockey squad last season.

Penn State snaps a six-game skid improving to 5-7-0 on the year with the victory while the Raiders drop to 7-6-2 with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State opened the scoring as sophomore Aiden Fink (Calgary, Alberta) drove the net and classmate Dane Dowiak (Pittsburgh, Pa.) sent a no-look, one-touch, backhanded pass from behind the net right on his tape and Fink didn’t miss from point-blank range for the 1-0 edge at 4:41 of the first period.
  • The Nittany Lions extended the lead midway through the first frame with a powerplay tally as sophomore Matt DiMarsico (Wexford, Pa.) redirected a point shot in the low slot by graduate student Jimmy Dowd Jr. (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) for the 2-0 edge at the 9:37 mark.
  • Colgate cut the deficit in half late in the opening stanza as Brett Chorske’s initial chance was blocked, but fell right on the stick of Alex DiPaolo at the near post and he had a yawning net for the 2-1 score at 18:06 of the period.
  • Penn State regained the two-goal edge late in the middle period as freshman Cade Christenson (Edmonton, Alberta) sprung classmate Charlie Cerrato (Fallston, Md.) on a breakaway and he beat Raider net-minder Andrew Takacs bar-down past the blocker for the 3-1 score at the 14:02 mark.
  • Colgate cut the deficit to a single goal midway through the third period as Daniel Panetta sent the puck on net from the high slot that popped off the blocker of Seifarth and snuck over the line for the 3-2 score at the 11:37 mark.
