KICKIN’ IT

On the back of a career night from graduate midfielder Natalie Wilson, in addition to tallies from freshman forward Aubrey Kulpa and graduate midfielder Rowan Lapi, Penn State advanced to the national quarterfinals following a 3-1 win over the eighth-seeded Vanderbilt Commodores in third-round action from the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, marking PSU's second-straight Elite Eight trip. Following Sunday night’s triumph in Tallahassee, the Nittany Lions secured their 15th all-time trip to the national quarterfinals and second advancement to the Elite Eight in a row. Penn State played in its eighth consecutive third round match in the NCAA Championships, marking the longest active stretch of Sweet 16 appearances in women’s college soccer. PSU landed its 66th all-time win in the national postseason and improved to 66-27-3 in the NCAA Tournament following its two-goal victory over the Commodores. The Nittany Lions will battle for their sixth appearance in the Women’s College Cup in program history and first bid since bringing home the national championship in 2015.

Wilson was the woman of the match in Penn State’s 24th fixture of the year, booking the most dominant individual performance of her collegiate career to help propel the Blue & White to their second consecutive national quarterfinal. Wilson, a native of Fairfax, Virginia, found the back of the net for the second time since joining the Penn State women’s soccer program in the spring of 2021, with both of her collegiate tallies going in the book as match-winning scores. Wilson’s banger was preceded by an assist on PSU’s first goal of the match toward the end of the first half, marking her first collegiate three-point outing. Individually, the Nittany Lions are paced by a 34-point campaign from redshirt senior forward Kaitlyn MacBean, who boasts 16 goals and a pair of assists in 2024, with senior midfielder Jordan Fusco standing as one of the most dominant facilitators in the nation with 12 assists. In goal, redshirt sophomore Mackenzie Gress leads the roster with 49 saves.

THIRD ROUND THRILLERS!

Penn State participated in its nation's-best eighth-consecutive NCAA Tournament Third Round match last weekend in Tallahassee, Florida, with the Nittany Lions booking their second consecutive trip to the National Quarterfinals by way of a 3-1 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores at Seminole Soccer Complex. PSU booked its second-ever win over Vanderbilt in the NCAA Tournament, with Sunday's result joining a second round win from the 2020-21 spring campaign in Cary, North Carolina. Just two of the nation's Power Four Conferences remain in contention for the national championship, with the Big Ten pairing of top-seeded USC and fourth-seeded Penn State joining six ACC programs in Duke, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Stanford, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech rounding out the Elite Eight following Sunday's third round matchups across the country. Two national No. 1 seeds remain in the hunt for the national title following the third round of action, with No. 1 Mississippi State eliminated by Notre Dame last weekend in Starkville.

TAKING ON THE TAR HEELS

Following the retirement of the most decorated women's collegiate soccer coach in the sport's history in Anson Dorrance, interim head coach Damon Nahas leads the North Carolina Tar Heels into the national quarterfinals in his first year as a head coach boasting a 19-5-0 overall record with a 7-3-0 finish in an ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference regular season. North Carolina earned an at-large bid out of the ACC and picked up a No. 2 seed in the Tallahassee Regional, with the Tar Heels narrowly missing out on a No. 1 seed to join fellow ACC program Duke. The Tar Heels opened the NCAA Tournament with a dominant 8-0 victory over USC Upstate, followed by a narrow last-minute 1-0 result against Santa Clara in the second round. UNC is fresh off a solid 3-0 win over B1G side Minnesota in the third round to advance to the national quarterfinals. The Tar Heels boast a pair of common opponents with Penn State, with North Carolina challenging both Virginia and Minnesota over the course of the 2024 campaign. UNC went 2-0 against those challengers, while the Nittany Lions went 2-1 with a pair of wins over Minnesota and a 2-1 loss to Virginia at home in August. Kate Faasse headlines the UNC roster this season, scoring 39 points on 18 goals and three assists. Maddie Dahlien leads the way in the passing game with seven helpers this year, while goalkeeper Clare Gagne owns 63 saves with 11 shutouts and a .750 save percentage.

STORY OF THE SERIES

One of the nation's most anticipated rivalry matchups renews on Friday evening, with the Nittany Lions and Tar Heels set to square off for the 10th time since the inaugural meeting in Chapel Hill in 1999. Penn State trails the all-time series by a 2-6-1 tally, with both teams fresh off the first-ever tie in last year's regular season meeting. Both Nittany Lion victories in the nine prior meetings came during the course of the regular season, with Penn State hauling in a 3-2 road win in the first-ever matchup on September 12, 1999. The other Penn State win came via a 1-0 result at Jeffrey Field on September 7, 2017, with Frannie Crouse logging the match-winning score in the seventh minute of action and Rose Chandler overseeing the shutout in goal. The Blue & White will challenge UNC in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time ever on Friday night, with the Tar Heels taking all three prior meetings. PSU and UNC have battled in the College Cup twice in 1999 and 2012, and in the national quarterfinals once in 2001, with the Tar Heels winning the national title in two of those three years. Penn State and North Carolina last tested one another a year ago on opening night of the 2023 season, with the team's playing to a scoreless draw. Despite UNC running up a striking 19-5 overall advantage in total shots, the Nittany Lions managed to place more shots on target in the match, outshooting UNC by a 3-2 margin.
