Women’s Tennis Hosts Final Weekend of Regular Season and Senior Day

The Nittany Lions welcome Minnesota on Friday, April 18 and No. 24 Wisconsin on Sunday for Senior Day

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Women’s Tennis (13-8, 4-7 B1G) is set to host Minnesota (10-14, 2-9 B1G) on Friday, April 18 at 3 p.m. and No. 24 Wisconsin (16-3, 9-2 B1G) on Sunday at 10 a.m. for Senior Day. Both matches are slated to be played outside at Sarni Tennis Center.  

The program will honor Deanna Lasorda and Yvonne Zuffova with a Senior Day ceremony prior to the beginning of Sunday’s match. Additionally, there will be a donut giveaway and the opportunity for fans to enter a drawing to win a tennis racket.  

The Nittany Lions enter the final weekend of the regular season ranked No. 53 in the ITA rankings.

Senior Spotlight 

  • Lasorda has competed in 10 singles and 20 doubles matches in her career. She picked up three victories this season while serving as a consistent leader and mentor to her teammates.  
  • She earned Academic All-Big Ten honors a season ago and was recently recognized for her 4.0 GPA during the fall semester. 
  • Zuffova has been a constant contributor to the Nittany Lion lineup, earning 48 singles and 34 doubles victories over her career. During her senior season, she matched a career-high with 13 singles wins while adding eight doubles victories.  
  • She is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a Masters of Science in Real Estate.

  • Penn State fell, 7-0, to No. 10 Ohio State last Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. 
  • Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima picked up an impressive 6-3 doubles victory over Sydni Ratliff and Sophia CisseIgnatiev on court two. 

Scouting Report - Minnesota 

  • Minnesota enters Happy Valley with a 10-14 (2-9 B1G) record.  
  • The Golden Gophers split last weekend’s action against Indiana and Purdue. They defeated Indiana, 4-1, and fell to Purdue, 4-2. 
  • On court one doubles, Anali Kocevar and Mia Liepert hold a 10-10 (4-5 B1G) record. The pair dropped both of their matches to the Hoosiers and Boilermakers. 
  • Aiva Schmitz plays the top court for singles. She has a 15-13 (2-5 B1G) record and is 9-9 on court one.  
  • Liepert on court two and Sofia Pinto on court four both went 2-0 against Indiana and Purdue.  

Scouting Report - Wisconsin 

  • The Badgers come in as one of the teams in the Big Ten, ranking fourth in the conference standings. Wisconsin is ranked No. 24 in the country according to ITA with a 16-3 (9-2 B1G) record.   
  • The team is coming off a weekend sweep of Purdue, 4-2, and Indiana, 4-1. 
  • Maria Sholokhova and Ariel Johnson are ranked No. 46 by ITA. On court one doubles, they are 10-1 this spring with a 5-0 Big Ten record. 
  • Sholokhova, ranked No. 8 in singles by ITA, boasts an incredible 16-2 (8-1 B1G) record during the spring.  
  • Taylor Cataldi is ranked No. 109 in singles. She is 13-2 (5-1 B1G), mainly on court two, this spring.  

Series History - Minnesota 

  • Penn State holds a 10-25 record against the Golden Gophers. 
  • The last win for the Nittany Lions was a 4-0 triumph at home during the 2023 season. 

Series History - Wisconsin 

  • The Badgers lead the all-time series 22-10. 
  • Penn State’s last victory in the series came in 2021, a 4-3 win in Happy Valley.
