Baseball Earns Friday Win Over Purdue

Nittany Lions score in five-straight innings to take the series opener

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team collected a 10-2 win over Purdue on Friday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Nittany Lions scored in each of the third through seventh innings, including three in the fifth and four in the sixth. Penn State improved to 23-13 overall and 11-8 in Big Ten play, while Purdue fell to 23-14 (5-11 Big Ten).

 

The Nittany Lions are now 9-1 this season in series/weekend openers.

 

Penn State tallied 10+ runs for the 19th time this season and the seventh time against a Big Ten opponent. In program history, PSU has posted 19 games of 10+ runs in a season on just one previous occasion (2000).

 

Ryan DeSanto got the Friday night start for the Nittany Lions, tossing five innings. He gave up two runs on five hits. DeSanto notched five strikeouts without walking a batter. He worked scoreless innings in four of five frames and had multiple strikeouts in the fourth.

 

Dimond Loosli fired two scoreless innings and struck out three batters. Matthew VanOstenbridge tossed a scoreless eighth and recorded two strikeouts. Harrison Lollin threw a shutout ninth and notched a strikeout.

 

Penn State pitchers retired the final 11 batters of the game, including six on strikeouts.

 

Carter Doorn started for Purdue, working four innings. He allowed two runs on five hits. Doorn recorded five strikeouts and no walks. Michael Vallone went one inning, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and striking out two. Nick Kolze walked both batters he faced, one eventually scoring, before Justin Guiliano went two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs. Enas Hayden threw one inning, allowing two runs. Joe Trenerry went 1.1 scoreless innings and struck out three.

 

Penn State tallied 10 runs on 13 hits. Jack Porter led PSU with three hits, including two doubles, three RBI and two runs. Bryce Molinaro had two hits, including a two-run triple, and scored twice. Ryan Weingartner drove in two runs with an RBI double and an RBI single. Joe Jaconski recorded a single and a double to go with two runs. Patrick Graham added two hits, including a double and an RBI single.

 

Graham recorded PSU’s 82nd steal of the season. PSU is just nine away from the program record of 91, set in 2000.

 

Purdue notched two runs on five hits. Logan Sutter had a double and a two-run homer. Breck Nowik added two hits.

 

The Boilermakers got on the board in the third. Camden Gasser dropped a leadoff single into left. A sac bunt moved Gasser to second and a groundout moved him to third. Sutter sent a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left for a two-run homer. Purdue led 2-0.

 

The Nittany Lions answered with a run in the bottom half. Jaconski roped a line drive into right-center and hustled to second for a leadoff double. A sac bunt by Cohl Mercado moved Jaconski to third. Weingartner smacked a line drive off the wall in left-center for a double to bring in Jaconski. PSU trailed 2-1.

 

Penn State tied the game in the fourth. Porter ripped a line drive over the third baseman and raced to second for a double. Graham followed with a single to left-center to bring home Porter. The game as even at 2-2.

 

The Nittany Lions took the lead in the fifth. With two outs, Paxton Kling and Molinaro reached on back-to-back singles through the left side. Porter lifted a fly ball that landed on the warning track for a double to bring in Kling and Molinaro. A grounder by Graham resulted in an error and Porter on third. A wild pitch allowed Porter to score to extend the PSU lead to 5-2.

 

Penn State plated four runs in the sixth. Nate Voss worked a leadoff walk and then went to second on an error on a pickoff attempt. Jaconski worked a walk. Mercado slashed a single through the middle to bring in Voss. A lineout-double play left Mercado at first. Kling drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Molinaro crushed a fly ball off the wall in right and hustled to third for a triple as Mercado and Kling scored. Porter followed with a single through the middle to bring home Molinaro. PSU pushed its lead to 9-2.

 

The Nittany Lions added a run in the seventh. With two outs, Jaconski reached on a single and Mercado was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Weingartner sent a single through the left side to bring in Jaconski. PSU led 10-2.

 

The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and features Ice Cream Day as the Penn State Berkey Creamery will be serving Grand Slam Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, the flavor Penn State baseball is sponsoring throughout April. The first 150 fans can grab Penn State baseball mini-helmets to get their ice cream scooped into.

 

Saturday will also feature postgame autographs and a trading card set giveaway and Sunday’s game begins at 1 p.m. and will include postgame kids run the bases.
