Men’s Tennis Splits Matches with No. 27 UCLA, Mercyhurst

Freshman Denys Foragic swept his opponent 6-0, 6-0 against Mercyhurst

UNIVERISTY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State men's tennis team went 1-1 on the day with a win against Mercyhurst and a loss to UCLA. The squad played strong, defeating the Lakers, 7-0, but came up short to UCLA, 4-0. 


UCLA

Doubles 

Loren Byers and Sam Bossem took the top spot, but dropped a close, 7-5, match to Giacomo Revelli and Alexander Hoogmartens. At third doubles, Reiya Hattori and Shri Murugesan played strong against Gianluca Ballotta and Emon van Loben Sels, but fell 6-4. 

 

On Court 2, Charl Morgan and Marcus Schoeman fought tough against Rudy Quan and Kaylan Bigun, but their match went unfinished tied at 6-6 due to UCLA already clinching the doubles point. 

 

Singles 

At the top spot, Morgan fell to No. 34 Quan, 6-3, 6-3, in a strong played match. On Court 3, Schoeman dropped his match, 6-4, 6-2, to Bigun. At the fourth spot, Hattori fell to Hoogmartens, 6-2, 6-3. 

 

Bossem took Court 2 nearly tied it up with No. 84 van Loben Sels with a 1-6, 6-5 score. Murugesan was set to play at fifth singles against Revelli and Nolan Ranger was ready to play Ballotta on Court 6, but the matches were all abandoned as UCLA had already clinched the win. 

 

The Bruins won the match 4-0. 

 
MERCYHURST

Doubles 

Duo Morgan and Schoeman took Court 1 and defeated Danylo Rekun and Lukas Cabue Valverde, 6-3. 

Hattori and Murugesan played at the second spot against Mykhailo Polishchuk and David Mengher, winning 6-1 and clinching the doubles point for Penn State. 

On Court 3, Ranger and Alex Sterin stepped up and played it out to defeat Colm Schultz and Derek Winsnes, 6-2. 

 

Singles 

Morgan played up on Court 1, taking his match to three sets against Rekun, ultimately defeating him, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. 

On Court 2, Bossem took down Valverde Cabue, 6-3, 6-3. 

At the third spot, Schoeman got the 6-3, 6-3 win over Schultz.

Murugesan played at fourth singles, defeating Polishchuk, 6-3, 6-2. 

On Court 5, Ranger took down Mengher, 6-2, 6-3. 

At the sixth spot, Forgaci played a great match, sweeping Wisnes, 6-0, 6-0. 

 

The Nittany Lions won the match, 7-0.
