Molinaro launches two homers; Nittany Lions win 15-10 to sweep Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Penn State baseball team showed off an impressive display of power to earn a 15-10 win at Minnesota on Sunday at Siebert Field. The Nittany Lions launched six homers, including two by Bryce Molinaro, to clinch the series sweep over the Gophers. Penn State moved to 21-10 overall (9-6 Big Ten), while Minnesota dropped to 11-17 on the season (2-10 Big Ten).

 

The Nittany Lions earned two road series sweeps (at Longwood, at Minnesota) in a season for the first time since 2000 (at Norfolk State, at Iowa).

 

Penn State swept a Big Ten road series for the first time since Maryland in 2024.

 

Penn State tallied 10+ runs for the 18th time this season and the seventh time against a Big Ten opponent. In program history, PSU has posted 18 games of 10+ runs in a season on just one previous occasion (2000).

 

The Nittany Lions launched six homers in a game for the first time since hitting seven at Indiana on April 12, 2024.

 

Penn State combined for 30 runs, 37 hits, nine doubles, two triples and nine homers in the series.

 

Logan Olson made his fourth start for the Nittany Lions, firing three shutout innings. He allowed just one hit and no walks, while striking out three. Olson recorded a strikeout in each of his three innings.

 

Matt Morash went two innings, giving up two runs on three hits and tallying two strikeouts. Matthew VanOstenbridge threw 1.1 innings, allowing four runs. Chase Renner went 1.2 innings and gave up four runs. Dimond Loosli finished the ninth and struck out one.

 

Justin Thorsteinson got the start for Minnesota, going 1.2 innings. He gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits. Joe Sperry went two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run (unearned) and two hits. Luke Ryerse worked 2.2 innings. He gave up one run on two hits and struck out four.

 

Adam Urban allowed five runs over 2.1 innings before Will Whelan gave up two runs without recording an out. Tyler Hemmesch worked 1.2 scoreless frames.

 

Penn State tallied 15 runs on 17 hits, including six home runs. Molinaro collected four hits, including a double and two homers, three RBI and three runs. Jack Porter contributed two doubles and a homer with two RBI and two runs. Joe Jaconski added a double and a homer with two RBI, while Cole Wagner tallied three hits, an RBI and three runs. Ryan Weingartner and Nate Voss also homered and drove in two runs.

 

Minnesota recorded 10 runs on 11 hits. Drew Berkland collected three hits, including a double and a homer, and four RBI. Weber Neels had three hits, including a homer, and two RBI. Jake Larson contributed two hits, including a homer, and four RBI.

 

Penn State jumped out to an early lead. With two outs in the first, Molinaro lined a single to right-center. Porter drove a double off the wall in center as Molinaro hustled home. Wagner followed with a single to center to bring in Porter. Wagner stole second and moved to third on an error. Jesse Jaconski sent a single to left to drive in Wagner and put PSU ahead, 3-0.

 

The Nittany Lions doubled their lead in the second. With one out, Mike Lucarelli reached on an error. Weingartner blasted a 422-foot homer to left-center for a two-run shot. Two batters later, Bryce Molinaro went yard to left-center. Molinaro’s 398-foot blast put PSU up, 6-0.

 

Penn State added a run in the third. Wagner led off the inning with a single to center. Joe Jaconski crushed a ground-rule double to center to put runners on second and third. Voss lifted a fly ball to right for a sac fly to bring in Wagner and extend the PSU lead to 7-0.

 

The Nittany Lions plated a run in the fourth. Kling started the frame with a triple to center. Molinaro followed with a fly ball to right for a sac fly to bring in Kling. PSU led 8-0.

 

Minnesota got on the board in the fifth. With two outs, Kris Hokenson held off on a 3-2 pitch for a walk. Berkland lifted a fly ball over the wall in center for a two-run homer. Penn State still held an 8-2 advantage.

 

Penn State added three runs in the seventh. After Jesse Jaconski was hit by a pitch, Joe Jaconski launched a two-run homer to left. Voss followed with a solo homer to left. PSU extended its lead to 11-2.

 

Minnesota answered with four runs in the bottom half. Jameson Martin walked and Brayden Hellum was hit by a pitch before Berkland lined a double to left to drive in both runners. Neels followed with a two-run homer to left. PSU still led, 11-6.

 

The Nittany Lions plated four runs in the eighth. With one out, Molinaro and Porter went back-to-back on solo homers. After a single by Wagner, Jesse Jaconski ripped a double to left-center to bring home Wagner. A wild pitch allowed Jaconski to score to push PSU’s lead to 15-6.

 

The Gophers responded in the bottom half of the eighth. After a single by Easton Richter, a homer by Larson cleared the fence in left. Minnesota trimmed its deficit to 15-8.

 

Minnesota added two runs in the ninth. Neels singled before Parker Knoll was hit by a pitch. Richter walked to load the bases before Larson singled to left to bring in Neels and Knoll for the final runs of the day.

 

The Nittany Lions travel to Morgantown on Tuesday for a midweek matchup against West Virginia. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Wagener Field at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The matchup will be broadcast on ESPN+.

 

Penn State returns to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park next weekend for a three-game series against USC, beginning on Friday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m.
