Women's Lacrosse Downs Ohio State in Overtime Thriller

A game-winner from Payton Wainman secured the Nittany Lion's fourth-consecutive conference win

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A golden goal from junior Payton Wainman gave Penn State women’s lacrosse its fourth consecutive conference win when the team downed Ohio State, 12-11, at Panzer Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Penn State improves to 6-7 (4-2 Big Ten) with the victory, while Ohio State falls to 8-4 (1-4 Big Ten).

Erika Ho posted one goal and two assists, in addition to grabbing four ground balls and winning three draw controls. Maggie Golder scooped up three ground balls for the Nittany Lions.

Sydney Manning tallied 12 saves for the Nittany Lions, including a woman-down stuff on an Ohio State free-position shot in the overtime period.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Quarter 1 – Penn State 4, Ohio State 4

Junior Erika Ho opened up the scoring just 40 seconds into the matchup between the Big Ten foes. The Buckeyes tallied their first of the day with 10:42 remaining in the quarter to level the scoring.

Freshman Brooke Long responded less than 20 seconds later, but Ohio State was able to strike back with two goals of its own to take its first lead of the afternoon.

Kelly’s free position goal put the Nittany Lions even with the Buckeyes. Ohio State was able to score one back, but number 15 notched her second of the afternoon, keeping the teams even after 15 minutes of play.

Quarter 2 – Penn State 7, Ohio State 5

A strong performance by Penn State netminder Sydney Manning kept the Buckeyes scoreless during the early minutes of the quarter.

Sophomore Kelly MacKinney put away the first goal of the quarter at the 12:19 mark, propelling the Nittany Lions into the lead. Ohio State was able to get one back on the free position though, preventing a PSU run.

Wainman notched her first of the afternoon over six minutes after MacKinney’s score, giving the lead back to the Nittany Lions. Freshman Ellie Wisch found the back of the net, extending Penn State’s lead to two going into halftime.

Quarter 3 – Penn State 9, Ohio State 10

The Buckeyes scored two back-to-back goals in the first 1:30 of the second half to eliminate Penn State’s lead.

Kelly responded with her third goal of the afternoon, assisted by Brooke Hoss for her first point of the day. Ohio State went on a 3-0 run, giving the Buckeyes a two-goal lead, but Elise Smigiel answered, bringing the Nittany Lions within one with 15 minutes remaining in regulation

Quarter 4 – Penn State 11, Ohio State 11

Wainman and Long’s connection tied up the score less than two minutes into the closing quarter, and over eight minutes of scoreless lacrosse followed to keep both teams at bay. A strong defensive effort from the Nittany Lions fought off two free-position attempts.

A free-position goal from Wainman brought the Nittany Lions back into the lead before an Ohio State score evened playing field.

After a lengthy yellow-card review in the closing minutes, the Buckeyes were awarded a free-position shot that was fought off by the tandem of Maggie Golder and Kate Dougherty to force overtime.

Overtime – Penn State 12, Ohio State 11

Ohio State was awarded the ball without a draw to open the overtime frame after Penn State’s end of regulation yellow card. A doorstep wrap around for the Buckeyes found on the crosse of Manning as she saved the would-be winner for the Buckeyes. On the other end, the Nittany Lions’ golden goal was scored by Wainman on a shovel shot on a feed from outside the 12-meter from Erika Ho, giving the junior a season-high day and sealing the overtime victory.
