Brian Ernst Season 2008

#26
PositionOFHeight6-0Weight175 lbsClassSeniorHometownBoyertown, Pa.High SchoolBoyertown
B/TS/R

Brian, who will be one of two fifth-year seniors on this year[apos]s team, brings a lot of value to the team with his versatility and his ability to perform consistently no matter what his role is. He will enter this year as the potential starting center fielder but he can play all three outfield positions and has done so during his career. He will most likely be a part of a three-player platoon once again along with returnee Scott Kelley and freshman Grant Youngblood. As a switch hitter, he often presents a tough matchup because he hits for nearly the same average from both sides of the plate. He hit .313 last year, the second straight year he has hit over .300 after hitting .291 as a freshman, and hit over .300 from both sides of the plate. He also can hit almost anywhere in the lineup as is evidenced by the fact that he hit in seven different spots in the lineup last year, all but the leadoff and cleanup spots, although he has hit leadoff in his career. His versatility and consistency at the plate should lead to him seeing lots of playing time once again this year and he should also be in the mix for some postseason honors. Also an outstanding student, Brian has been a member of the Dean[apos]s List every semester from the spring of 2004 through the fall of 2007.

Summer 2007: Hit .343 in 22 games (19 starts) for the Kutztown Rockies of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, where he was teammates with Joe Blackburn on the ACBL title-winning team....Got a late start to the season due to a broken thumb suffered at the end of the Big Ten Tournament....Collected 24 hits, scored 11 runs, had nine RBI and went 8-for-9 in stolen bases....Was also perfect in the field in 24 fielding chances.

2007 (Junior): After playing mainly right field as a sophomore, played that position the least out of the three outfield positions....Started 24 games each in left field and center field and three games in right and also started at DH once....Played left mainly when Garrett Field played center and started in center when Scott Kelley played left....Was hitting just .256 after the second weekend of Big Ten play on April 8 but over the last 32 games, of which 31 he played in since the Temple game on April 11, hit .351 (40-for-114) to finish the season with a .313 average, which was third on the team....Was on of four players on the team to hit over .300 and did so for the second straight year....Ranked third on the team in hits (60), sixth in RBI (22), seventh in total bases (67), and tied for second in hit by pitches (5)....Also tied for third on the team in multiple-hit games (19), including five three-hit games, and had four multi-RBI games....Had two seven-game hitting streaks on the year and in one stretch, hit in 14 of 15 games and in 20 of 22 contests....Hit in 24 of his last 31 games and had RBI in 10 of those games....Led the team in hitting in Big Ten games at a .362 clip....Also a solid fielder, he committed just three errors in 95 total chances....Has the highest GPA on the team at 3.68 while majoring in accounting....Was the recipient of the Shorty Stoner award for having the highest GPA on the team....Was named third team All-Big Ten.

'Ernie is a senior this year and has been one of our most consistent and reliable guys the past two seasons. He is one of our team captains because of his leadership abilities both in the classroom and on the field. Brian finished strong last season as one of our offensive leaders and was a key part during in our conference and post season success. He will play in center field for us this year and will also help contribute at the top of the order. Ernie is a very important part of our team and we are excited to have him back for one more year.'
