UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Women’s Tennis (14-8, 5-7 B1G) took down Minnesota (10-15, 2-10 B1G), 4-0, on Friday afternoon at Sarni Tennis Center. Senior Deanna Lasorda secured the win for Penn State with a win on court six.
The Nittany Lions earned the doubles point in come-from-behind fashion after Jordina Cegarra and Patricia Grigoras fell on court one. On court two, Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima defeated Jeselle Ante and Sofia Pinto in a 6-4 decision.
Lasorda and Maria Daciana Ciubotaru clinched the point with a 6-4 win of their own on court three against Arina Valitova and Aiva Schmitz. The crowd at Sarni Tennis Center erupted as Lasorda split the ball between Valitova and Schmitz for the point.
Penn State carried the momentum into singles play. Grigoras, playing on court three, was the first Nittany Lion to secure a win. She defeated Anali Kocevar by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Uchijima was the next to win. She triumphed over Liepert, 6-3, 6-3, on court two.
Lasorda’s victory on court six came against Anlin Xie, 6-3, 6-2, to conclude the match. It was her second singles win of the season.
Dorner on court one, Cegarra on court four and Ciubotaru on court five all had their matches go unfinished in the third set.
The Penn State women’s tennis program will celebrate seniors Lasorda and Yvonne Zuffova on Senior Day against No. 24 Wisconsin at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Additionally, there will be a donut giveaway and the opportunity to win a free tennis racket for fans.
