Baseball Falls 12-11 In Eleven Innings Against Maryland

Molinaro, Porter, Voss homer; Series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team fell in a back-and-forth game, 12-11, in 11 innings against Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Penn State tied the game in the eighth and 10th innings, but the Terrapins got the go-ahead run in the 11th.

 

Penn State is now 26-19 overall (12-14 Big Ten), while Maryland moved to 22-26 on the season (8-15 Big Ten).

 

The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.

 

The Nittany Lions tallied 10+ runs for the 22nd time this season and the 11th time against a Big Ten opponent. Penn State tied its program record for 10+ run games in a season, matching the 2000 season.

 

Logan Olson made the start for the Nittany Lions, working three innings. He allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks. Anthony Steele tossed two innings, giving up one run (unearned) on three hits. Steele recorded two strikeouts and one walk.

 

Mason Horwat worked two shutout innings, giving up two hits, and struck out three. He tallied two strikeouts in the seventh. Chase Renner went 1.2 innings, giving up two runs (unearned) on four hits and striking out three. Ben DeMell threw one-third of an inning and allowed one out.

 

Harrison Lollin went one inning, allowing two runs on two hits. Will Andrews threw one inning, allowing one run on three hits and striking out one.

 

Joey McMannis started for Maryland, going four innings. He gave up five runs on seven hits with one strikeout and three walks. Ryan Van Buren threw three innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three. Cristofer Cespedes worked one-third of an inning, giving up two runs on three hits. Andrew Johnson threw 1.2 frames, surrendering two runs. Andrew Koshy finished the game with two scoreless innings.

 

Penn State collected 11 runs on 17 hits. Jack Porter had two hits, including a two-run homer, and scored twice. Bryce Molinaro added a two-run homer and Nate Voss had a solo shot among three hits. Derek Cease notched a career-best four hits and scored twice, while Ryan Weingartner had three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI. Paxton Kling contributed two hits and three RBI.

 

Weingartner tallied his 26th steal of the season. He is just one steal away from the program season record held by Michael Campo (27; 2000) and Kyle Hannon (27; 2023).

 

The Terrapins secured 12 runs on 22 hits. Chris Hacopian notched six hits and an RBI. Eddie Hacopian added four hits, including a triple, and four RBI, while Jacob Orr had three hits, including a double and a triple, and drove in two runs. Hollis Porter and Brayden Martin both homered.

 

Maryland got on the board in the first. With one out, Chris Hacopian sent a single through the right side. Eddie Hacopian replaced his brother on first after a fielder’s choice. Alex Calarco was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Orr’s line drive down the left field line got stuck under the left field wall, allowing Orr to hustle to third for a triple and both runners to score. Maryland led 2-0.

 

The Nittany Lions answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Weingartner dropped a fly ball into right and hustled to second for a leadoff double. Kling lined a single to center to put runners on the corners. After Kling stole second, Porter worked a walk. On ball four, a wild pitch allowed Weingartner to score. Molinaro bounced into a double play while Kling crossed the plate. The game was even at 2-2.

 

The Terrapins plated three runs in the third. Martin worked a leadoff walk before Chris Hacopian singled through the middle. Eddie Hacopian sent a line drive to the right-center gap and raced to third for a triple as both runners scored. Alex Calarco bounced into a groundout but allowed Eddie Hacopian to cross the plate. Maryland held a 5-2 lead.

 

Maryland added a run in the fourth. Aden Hill drew a leadoff walk. He stole second before Martin drew a walk. Two batters later, Eddie Hacopian shot a single through the left side to drive in Hill. The Terrapins extended their lead to 6-2.

 

Penn State chipped away in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Voss lifted a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left. Matt Maloney worked a walk before Cease shot a single into right. Weingartner drew a walk to load the bases. Kling ripped a single into center to bring in Maloney and Cease. PSU trailed 6-5.

 

Maryland responded with a run in the fifth. Orr’s sharp line drive went down the left field line for a double. He moved up to third on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt and scored on an infield single by Hill. Maryland led 7-5.

 

The Nittany Lions tied the game in the seventh. Porter sent a sharp grounder into left to begin the frame. Molinaro launched a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left. Molinaro’s 432-foot blast evened the game at 7-7.

 

Penn State took the lead in the eighth. Maloney started the frame with a single through the middle. Cease showed bunt and then slashed a single into left to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch moved Cease and pinch-runner Joey DeMucci to second and third. Weingartner lined a single to right to bring in DeMucci. Kling followed with a fly ball to left for a sac fly to drive in Cease. PSU led 9-7.

 

Maryland tied the game in the top of the ninth. With one out, Hill reached on an error before pinch-hitter Parker Corbin singled to left to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Chris Hacopian lined a single to center to bring in Hill. After a pitching change, Eddie Hacopian sent a single into right to bring home Corbin. The game was even at 9-9.

 

The Terrapins took the lead in the 10th. After a walk by Orr to begin the frame, Hollis Porter launched the first pitch he saw over the wall in right. Maryland led 11-9.

 

In the bottom of the 10th, Cohl Mercado worked a four-pitch leadoff walk. Jack Porter crushed the first pitch he saw over the wall in left. The game was tied, again, at 11-11.

 

Maryland re-took the lead in the 11th. Leading off the inning, Martin lifted an 0-2 pitch over the wall in right. The Terps led 12-11.
