UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. November 22, 2005 - Amanda Brown (Kennett Square, Pa.) tied her career high with 18 points and Adrienne Squire (Indianapolis, Ind.) set a new career mark with 17 to lead the Penn State women's basketball team to an 81-62 victory over Duquesne at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.
The win improved Penn State's record to 1-2 while Duquesne dropped to 1-1. Penn State shot an impressive 52 percent in the game, including 55 percent in the first half.
Penn State opened the game with 10 straight unanswered points from four different players and led by as many as 18 in the first half. Brown led all Penn State scorers at the half with 12 points while Squire chipped in eight, including two 3-pointers in the period. The Lady Lions shot an impressive 55 percent in the first half while holding Duquesne to a paltry 28 percent.
In the second half Duquesne cut the score to 51-45 with 13:10 left to play behind three straight 3-pointers and eight points from forward Loui Hall. Penn State regrouped, however, and scored seven straight points to go up 58-45 with 11:45 left to play. Duquesne ended the drought with a bucket at the 10:20 mark, but Squire responded with a big 3-pointer to keep the momentum going Penn State's way and spark another run as the Lady Lions cruised the rest of the game.
The team breaks for the Thanksgiving Holiday, and will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Old Dominion. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Comcast Sports Net will air the game live in the Norfolk area, and WPSU-TV will air the game at 10 p.m. As always, the Penn State Sports Radio Network will carry the game, and WBUS and WMAJ will air it locally in State College.
