UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's basketball team opens a two-game home stand with a game vs. Pittsburgh on Friday at 7 p.m. The Lady Lions will then take on No. 24/24 Texas Tech on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Pittsburgh game will be broadcast live on WPSU-TV (Adelphia Channel 3) and FSN-Pittsburgh (Adelphia Channel 34). Fans who miss those broadcasts can catch the game on Saturday at 6 p.m. on CSTV.
The Lady Lions (1-3) lead the all-time series against the Panthers, 24-11. Penn State won last season's matchup, 84-79, in overtime at Pittsburgh. Tanisha Wright led all scorers with a career-high 32 points. Amanda Brown (Kennett Square, Pa.) recorded a double-double in that game with 10 rebounds and 11 points. The last time the teams met at the Jordan Center, Penn State rolled to a 96-44 victory. Pittsburgh last won at Penn State in 1988, 74-70.
The Lady Lions are led by Brown, who is averaging 15.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg. Brown leads the Big Ten in field goal percentage, shooting 74.2 percent. Adrienne Squire (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Kamela Gissendanner (Clairton, Pa.) are both averaging over 12 points a game as well. Freshman Brianne O'Rourke (Pittsburgh, Pa.) leads the Big Ten in assists, averaging 6 per game. Squire has been especially hot as of late, and has scored 37 points, including nine 3-pointers in the last two games.
Pittsburgh has a 5-1 record coming into the game at Penn State. The Panthers beat Duquesne, 82-69, in their last game to break a five-game losing streak against their cross-town rival. Pitt is led by Marcedes Walker, who is averaging 18.8 ppg and 8.0 rpg. Three other players also average double-figure points.
Texas Tech has struggled to a 1-4 start, including a three-game losing streak. The Lady Raiders host Sacramento State tonight before heading to State College. Texas Tech leads the all-time series with Penn State, 2-1. The Lady Raiders won last year's game in Lubbock, 79-65. That contest will air live on espn2.
