Nittany Lion Lacrosse Team Falls to Loyola 9-6

Senior co-captain Nate Whitaker had a goal and an assist in Penn State's ECAC League Lacrosse opener, a 9-6 loss to Loyola.

Baltimore, Md. ?C March 4, 2006 ?C The Penn State Nittany Lion men??s lacrosse team dropped to 0-2 on the season after a 9-6 loss to Loyola. The Nittany Lions led 6-5 after three periods of play but were shutout 4-0 in the final period.

The Greyhounds?? Jordan Rabidou scored the first of his two goals just 45 seconds into the first period. Patrick Kennedy scored again for Loyola to give them a 2-0 lead. Penn State junior Patrick Heim (Wayne, Pa.) scored an unassisted goal to put the Lions on the board. Sophomore Andrew Mackrides (Newtown Square, Pa.) tied the game at 2-2 off an assist from junior Brian Boyle (Derry, N.H.).

Richards scored an unassisted goal minutes into the second period to give Loyola their last lead until the fourth period. The Nittany Lions scored three unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead entering the half. Senior co-captain Nate Whitaker (Great Falls, Va.) scored his fourth goal on the season on an assist from Boyle, his second of the game.

Penn State freshman goalie Drew Adams (Springfield, Pa.) recorded seven of his 19 saves in the third period despite allowing two goals. Boyle scored his first goal of the season in the third period, giving him three points on the day.

Loyola scored five unanswered goals to cap off its first win of the season. Greyhounds?? sophomore Paul Richards netted two if his career-high three goals, including the game winner, in the final period.

Loyola out shot the Nittany Lions 39-31 (28-21 on goal). Five of the Greyhounds?? nine goals came off the bench from Rabidou and Richards. Rabidou was also won 9-14 face-offs and picked up six groundballs. Nittany Lion keeper Adams recorded a career-high 19 saves while Loyola??s Michael Fretwell had 15. Both teams were shutout in extra man opportunities.

The Nittany Lions will next take the field this Wednesday against Dartmouth. Action begins at 12 p.m. at St. Paul??s School in Baltimore, Md.
