Women?' Tennis to Host Final Pair of Matches

Lauren Holzberg picked up a big win in singles play against Ohio State's Kristin Messmer to boost her dual-match record to 12-4 on the season.

University Park, Pa., April 12, 2006??The Penn State women??s tennis team will play their final home matches this weekend against Big Ten competitors Iowa and Minnesota. The Lions are set to face No. 33 Iowa on Fri. April 14 at 5 p.m. and Minnesota on Sun. April 16 at 10 a.m. Two wins this weekend will boost Penn State??s record to .500 on the season.

Penn State??The Lions currently hold a 7-9 record on the season, including a 1-5 mark in the Big Ten. Freshman Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) leads the Lions in singles play with an overall record of 12-4 in dual matches. She is coming off of a big win against Ohio State??s Kristin Messmer 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6). Other Lions to prospectively see action this weekend are Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India), Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec), Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.), Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Foes??The No. 33 Iowa Hawkeyes (13-4, 5-1 Big Ten) are individually led by Meg Racette and Jacqueline Lee. Racette is currently ranked No. 37 in singles play and Lee is on a 15-match winning streak, with a 16-1 mark on the season. The Minnesota Gophers (4-14, 1-5 Big Ten) recently picked up their Big Ten win against Wisconsin on April 9 with a score of 4-3. Nischela Reddy, Ida Malmberg and Danielle Mousseau sparked the Gophers in play.

With weather permitting, action will take place at the Sarni Tennis Center. Otherwise, competition will be in the Indoor Tennis Center. This will be the Lions?? last show at University Park this spring. All fans in attendance will receive free pizza after doubles action around 5:30 p.m. Penn State will conclude regular season play next weekend as they face Michigan State on Sat. April 22 at 11 a.m. and Michigan on Sun. April 23 at 10 a.m.
