University Park, Pa., April 19, 2006 ?C Penn State senior women??s gymnast Jennifer Orlando (Herndon, Va.) will represent the Nittany Lions at the 2006 NCAA National Championships hosted by Oregon State this weekend. Orlando will be competing in the individual all-around while traveling with Georgia in the second preliminary session to begin at 7:00 p.m. PT (10:00 p.m. ET) on Thursday, April 20.
Orlando and Georgia drew Olympic competition order in the second session. They will begin competition on vault and following a bye in the second rotation, will move to bars and beam. Following another bye, they will conclude the evening on floor.
Orlando advanced to the NCAA Championships by finishing fourth in the all-around with a score of 39.100 at the NCAA Central Regional hosted by LSU on April 7. She was Penn State??s top finisher on both the vault (9.800) and the floor (9.825) while also finishing in the top 16 on both the bars (9.750) and the beam (9.725).
This will be the first-ever individual NCAA Championships appearance for Orlando and the second appearance of her career. Last season the Nittany Lions advanced to the championships as a team for the first time since the 2001 season.
Orlando finished in the top five in the all-around in all nine meets in which she competed in it. She claimed her first all-around title of the season at Pittsburgh on March 18 with a 39.175. For the season, Orlando claimed four individual event titles, including two on vault, one on floor and one in the all-around. She finished in the top five on five occasions on the vault, once on the bars, three times on the beam and five times on the floor.
