Women?' Track and Field Collects Four NCAA Regional Qualifying Bids

University Park, Pa., April 22, 2006 - The Penn State women??s track and field team competed today in the Nittany Lion Relays. Despite rainy weather, Penn State collected four NCAA regional qualifying bids.

All-American and senior Jennifer Leatherman finished first in the shot put and hammer throw with NCAA regional qualifying marks. Her toss in the shot put was 48-10 ? and in the hammer she threw 191-11. Junior Helen Higgins finished second in the hammer throw and threw an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 180-08. Sophomore Heidi Nadeau finished first in the javelin with an NCAA regional qualifying throw of 143-01.

Sophomore Dominique Blake finished first in the 400 meter dash (55.06) and second in the 200 meter dash (25.47). Senior Sara Shoaff finished first in the 200 meter dash in a time of 24.72.

In the 800 meter run sophomore Jordan Bauman finished first in a time of 2:15.21. Freshman Janelle Young finished first in the 3,000 meter run in a time of 10:21.13. In the 100 meter hurdles Monique Walker finished first (14.32).

Penn State??s 4x400 meter relay team finished first in a time of 3:54.88. The relay team consisted of Blake, sophomore and All-American Shana Cox, Shoaff and junior Briene Simmons.

Junior Amber Strouse finished first in the high jump with a mark of 5-06. Freshman Emma Schmelzer finished first in the discus throw with a mark of 149-04.

Next up for the women??s track and field team is the Penn Relays from April 27-29.
