Women's Tennis Heads To Big Ten Championship as No. 8 Seed

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 25, 2006 - The Penn State women's Tennis team will travel to Champaign, Illinois on Thursday to compete in the 2006 Big Ten Conference Women's Tennis Championship, hosted by the University of Illinois and running Thursday through Sunday. Illinois will be providing live scoring, and fans should check GoPSUsports.com the day of the match for a link.

The No. 8 seeded Lions will take on No. 9 seed Minnesota beginning at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday. The match will be played at the Illini Groove Tennis Courts.

The Lions completed their regular season play last weekend at Michigan State. They finished the season 2-8 in the Big Ten and 8-12 overall.

The Lions met with Minnesota earlier in the season, and defeated the Gophers, 5-2. Andreea Niculescu, Katelyn BeVard, Jenny Shular and Lauren Holzberg picked up singles wins at the Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 spots, respectively, and took the doubles point with two wins. The all-time series record stands at 4-11, in Minnesota's favor.

The winner will take on No. 1 seed Northwestern at 9 a.m. ET on Friday at the Atkins Tennis Center. The Wildcats went undefeated in Big Ten play this season.

At last year's Big Ten Championship, the No. 8 seeded Lions defeated No. 9 seeded Ohio State, 4-1, but were then fell to No. 1 seed Northwestern, 4-0.
