Women's Tennis Rallies for 4-3 Win Over Minnesota at Big Ten Championship

Leyla Morzan picked up a win at No. 6 singles to help the Lions top Minnesota 4-3. The Lions will take on Northwestern tomorrow beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Champaign, Ill.; April 27, 2006 ?C Four singles wins propelled the Penn State Women's Tennis team to victory today during the first round of the 2006 Big Ten Conference Women's Tennis Championships.

Junior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) won her first set at the No. 3 singles spot, but lost the second 6-0. BeVard came back in the third, topping Minnesota's Danielle Mousseau, 6-4,0-6,6-4.

Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) breezed through her match for a win at No. 4 singles, defeating Minnesota's Mariana Spilca 6-2, 6-1.

Despite losing a close second set in a tiebreaker, freshman Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) picked up a win at the No. 5 spot against Minnesota's Jane Anderson, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, B.C.) picked up a win at the No. 6 singles spot, beating Marina Bugaenco, 6-2, 7-5.

The Lions couldn't pick up a doubles win, though Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) and Shular came close at the No. 1 spot, dropping to Minnesota's Nischela Reddy and Ida Malmberg, 5-8.

The Lions will take on Northwestern tomorrow at the University of Illinois Atkins Tennis Center. The match will begin at 11:00 a.m. (Eastern Time).

Earlier this season, the Wildcats, who are undefeated in Big Ten play this season, shut out the Lions, 7-0.
