Philadelphia, Pa., April 29, 2006- Penn State women??s track and field competed at the Penn Relays and collected numerous NCAA regional qualifying bids. The women??s 4x400 meter relay team finished first in an NCAA regional qualifying time of 3:39.25. The relay team consisted of junior Kim Markel, sophomore??s Briene Simmons and Dominique Blake and senior Sara Shoaff. Markel also received an NCAA regional qualifying bid in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 59.92.
Senior and All-American Jennifer Leatherman received three NCAA regional qualifying bids in the hammer, discus and shot put. She finished first in the hammer championships with a mark of 65.12. Leatherman finished sixth in the discus championships (166-6) and seventh in the shot put championships (47-09 ?). Freshman Emma Schmeltzer finished third in college discus event with an NCAA regional qualifying throw of 48.53.
Sophomore Sonja Hinish and senior Kate Curran finished seventh and eighth in the steeplechase with NCAA regional qualifying times of 10:47.40 and 10:49.05. In the sprint medley championships Shoaff, junior Kamilah Salaam, Blake and Simmons finished seventh in a time of 3:52.37. In the 10,000 meter run senior and All-American Molly Landreth finished second in a time of 35:15.76.
Next up for the women is the Penn State Open on May 6th. The meet is set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
