Women's Soccer Begins Season with Penn State Invitational



UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; June 8, 2006 - Penn State begins the 2006 women's soccer season by hosting a top-notch tournament when UCLA, Tennessee and Maryland come to Happy Valley for the 2006 Penn State Invitational.

Maryland and Tennessee start the action at Jeffrey Field on Friday, Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. That match is followed by the Lions' match-up with 2005 national runner-up UCLA at 7:30 p.m. Both Penn State and UCLA were 2005 College Cup participants, with the 23-0-2 Lions failing to advance to the finals after a 4-3 penalty kick deficit to Portland and the 22-2-2 Bruins losing 4-0 to the eventual champion Pilots. Penn State finished No. 2 in the NSCAA's final poll and had the No. 5 ranked recruiting class according to Soccer Buzz while UCLA finished No. 3 and brought in the No. 2 ranked recruiting class.

After a Friday of action that is sure to leave Nittany Lion fans wanting more, the Penn State Invitational continues with the Terps and Bruins at noon on Sunday, Aug. 27. Penn State will meet the Tennessee Lady Vols at 2:30 p.m. to conclude tournament action. The Lady Vols finished with a 15-6-2 record in 2005 and were ranked No. 15 in the NSCAA's final poll.
