PHILADELPHIA, Pa. September 22, 2006 ?C Four Nittany Lion women??s tennis players kicked off their season at the Cissie Leary Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania today with Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) and Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) earning first round victories.

Abraham defeated Nina Suda (Columbia), 6-1, 6-3, but lost to Lauren Sadaka (Penn), 6-4, 6-7 (7), 10-6 in the second round. Shular topped Minnesota??s Karina Chiarello, 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Penn??s Julia Koulbitskaya (6-0, 6-1) in the second round.

In other singles action, Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) lost to Danielle Mousseau (Minnesota), 6-2, 7-5. Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.), who had a first-round bye, dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision Penn??s Yulia Rivelis.

Abraham and Holzberg teamed up to defeat Alexis Plukas and Lauren Sadaka of Penn, 9-7, in first round doubles active, but lost to Princeton??s Blakely Ashley and Melissa Saiontz (8-6) in the second. In the other doubles match of the day, Shular and BeVard lost to Darcy Robertson and Joanna Roth of Princeton, 8-4.

The Nittany Lions will resume play tomorrow at 11a.m.
