GREENVILLE, S.C. September 29, 2006 - The Nittany Lions faced tough opponents on Friday in the opening day of the Furman Fall Classic. Sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) came away with first-round singles wins for the day. Dohanics defeated UNC??s Linzee Mabrey (5-7, 6-4, 6-2), while McCarthy topped Furman??s Christin Thompson (3-6, 6-2, 6-2).

In other singles action, Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) fell to USC??s Christyn Lucas (6-1, 6-2), Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) lost to Vanderbilt??s Caroline Ferrell (6-2, 6-0), and Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Qu??bec) was defeated by Furman??s Bonnie Baird (6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-5 (3)). Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Vanderbilt??s Taka Bertrand, while Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) lost to Tennessee??s Blakeley Griffith by a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 count.

In doubles play, Dohanics and Niculescu teamed up to defeat Furman??s Christin Thompson and Lauren Tomory, 8-5 in the first round, but fell to USC??s Laura Ganzer and Miranda Gutierrez, 8-3 in the second. Shular and Holzberg lost to Clemson??s Federica van Adrichem and Carol Salge, 8-4, but bounced back in the consolation bracket to defeat Wisconsin??s Liz Carpenter and Katya Mirnova (8-3).

Also in doubles, Abraham and Lotto dropped a pair of matches, falling to Vanderbilt??s Bertrand and Catherine Newman, 8-5, and Wisconsin??s Kaylan Caiati and Kim Roberts, 8-3. Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) and McCarthy were defeated by UNC??s Hanes Harris and Alexandra Jurewitz, 8-6, and then fell to Clemson??s Selma Babic and Ina Hadziseliovic, 8-4.
