HANOVER, N.H.; October 22, 2006 ?C Sophomore Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and senior Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) continued play at the ITA Regionals at the Alexis Boss Tennis Center and Alan D. Gordon Pavilion on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. Both players earned second round wins before dropping matches in the round of 32.

Holzberg jumped out the early lead against Virginia??s Jennifer Stevens with a 6-2 victory in the opening set. However, Holzberg dropped the second set 6-3 before moving on to the third round with a decisive 6-1 victory in the final set.

Holzberg drew a tough assignment in the third round as she was pitted against 18th-seeded Stephanie Schnietter of Harvard. Schnietter claimed the first set by a 6-4 score, but Holzberg rallied back to earn a 6-4 victory in the second before dropping a hard-fought third set, 6-4.

??We moved Lauren into a higher bracket at the New York City Invitational,?? head coach Buffy Baker said. ??She took some tough losses that weekend, but ultimately it helped her this weekend. Lauren ended the weekend on a high note.??

In other singles action, Abraham returned to top form a she coasted to a two-set win over Army??s Sarah Giles-Madden (6-1, 6-1) in the second round. Abraham could not continue her ITA Regional run in a round of 32 match against #5 seed Beier Ko of Harvard. Ko posted a 6-0 shutout in the first set, but Abraham put up a fight in the second set before coming up short by a 7-6 (6) margin.

??Sasha was matched up with a really tough competitor in Beier Ko,?? Baker said. ??One thing that we can take from this weekend is that challenges will only make you better.??

The Nittany Lions will take the week off before returning to the court for the Penn State Mock Duals on Nov. 3-4.
