UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. October 5, 2006 - The Nittany Lions will head to the Empire State this weekend for the New York City Invitational hosted by the National Tennis Center at the Billy Jean Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.
Several teams will compete this weekend including Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Duke, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Dartmouth, Cornell, Boston College, Columbia and Tennessee. Play will begin Saturday and continue through Sunday, with the finals occurring Monday.
??This is an exciting environment to be in, Flushing Meadows,?? said head coach Buffy Baker. ??We hope the caliber of play was like it was a month ago there!??
The Nittany Lions are coming off of a difficult weekend following the Furman Fall Classic, where they faced some of the top players in the country. In singles, sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) defeated UNC??s Linzee Mabrey (5-7, 6-4, 6-2) and freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) topped Furman??s Christin Thompson (3-6, 6-2, 6-2), both earning first-round wins.
In doubles, Dohanics and Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Qu??bec) teamed up to finish third in the flight three tourney after an 8-5 win over Furman??s Lisa Bornt-Davis and Bonnie Baird.
In addition to Dohanics, McCarthy and Niculescu, seniors Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) and Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.), junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.), sophomores Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and freshman Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) will travel to New York this weekend.
Following the New York City Invite, the Nittany Lions will have a week off before returning to action for the ITA Regionals at Dartmouth College October 20-22.
