UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa; November 3, 2006 - Freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) claimed the doubles title today in the Penn State Invitational against Cornell in their sole home match of the fall 2006 season.
After a bye in the first round, the doubles pair defeated Nisha Suda and Tamara John (8-0) and then went on to top Catherine Duboc and Shayna Miller (8-5).
In other doubles action, Nittany Lions Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Qu??bec) fell to Kasia Prenata and Elizabeth Googe (9-7), but later defeated to Suda and John (8-1). Penn State??s Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Kristine Harclerode (Lancaster, Pa.) were defeated by Duboc and Miller (9-7) (4), but turned things around by winning 8-7 against Prenata and Googe.
In one round of singles, Cornell??s Weatherly Schwab topped Penn State??s Jenna Shedd (6-2,1-6,6-3), earning the winning spot for Flight D. Singles action will continue Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Sarni Tennis Center off of Bigler Road behind the outdoor pool. Admission is free.
