UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.; December 16, 2006 ?? The Lady Lions (6-6) will attempt to bounce back from a tough road loss when they travel to Washington D.C. to face Georgetown Sunday at 3 p.m. in the team??s final non-conference game. This will be the last game for the Lady Lions, who are looking for their first road win since Nov. 10, before exams and a break for the holiday season.
Sunday??s game will mark the reunion of Lady Lion head coach Rene Portland and her former player Terri Williams-Flournoy, who helped Penn State to three NCAA Tournament appearances during her four-year career (1988-91). Williams-Flournoy is one of two former Portland players coaching at the NCAA Division I level (Southern Illinois?? Dana Eikenberg).
The game will be broadcast on the Penn State Sports Radio Network with Jerry Fisher (play-by-play) and Chris Morelli (analyst) calling the action. The game will air locally on WMAJ and WBUS. The audio feed and a link to GameTracker are available at www.GoPSUSports.com.
These two teams have only met twice on the hardwood with Penn State picking up a win in the series opener in 1982 and Georgetown earning its revenge in the 1993 NCAA Tournament with a win on the Lady Lions?? home court. This will be the first time that the squads have playing in Washington D.C.
The Lady Lions fell behind 22-2 in the early going at Mississippi Sunday and never recovered on the way to a 65-48 loss to the Rebels. Junior Adrienne Squire (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded her ninth double figure scoring performance of the season with a team-high 13 points, while freshman Tyra Grant (Youngstown, Ohio) scored nine of her 11 points in the second half.
Senior Amanda Brown (Kennett Square, Pa.) became just the 18th player in school history to grab 600 career rebounds when she pulled down six boards in the Mississippi loss. She also moved into the Top 5 on Penn State??s career blocks with three rejections against Ole Miss, passing Tina Henry (140) for fifth place on the list. Brown enters the Georgetown game with 141 career blocks.
Sophomore guard Brianne O??Rourke (Pittsburgh, Pa.) dished out seven assists in Sunday??s loss to Ole Miss, making her the 15th Lady Lion to amass 200 career assists. She is now tied for 14th on the PSU all-time chart with 200 helpers.
The Hoyas are 8-3 in the early going and have won eight of their last nine games after an 0-2 start to the season. Kieraah Marlow is the go-to player for Georgetown, averaging a team-best 16.2 points to go along with 6.8 rebounds per game. Kate Carlin has been a solid performer off the bench for the Hoyas as she contributes 9.4 points and 2.3 rebounds per outing.
After breaking for exams and the holiday season, the Lady Lions will begin the Big Ten slate with a road trip to Illinois (Dec. 28) and Purdue (Dec. 31) before returning to the BJC for its Big Ten home opener on Jan. 4 against Northwestern.
