UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 27, 2007 ?C The Penn State women??s tennis team (0-1) let their first home match of the spring season slip by them Saturday afternoon as the Penn Quakers topped the Nittany Lions, 5-2.
Senior Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) and freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) came out strong in doubles, topping Yulia Rivelis and Julia Koulbitskaya (8-6). Junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) fell to Ekaterina Kosminskaya and Maria Anismova (8-3) and sophomores Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) dropped an 8-4 count to Charlotte Tansill and Michelle Mitchell, clinching the doubles point for Penn.
Shular and Dohanics were the big winners on the day in singles of the Lions. Shular topped Anisimova (6-2, 6-1) while Dohanics defeated Tansill (7-5, 6-0). Penn took over from there, with Rivelis defeating BeVard (6-3, 6-1) and Kosminskaya topping Abraham (6-3, 6-1). McCarthy dropped a pair of sets to Koulbitskaya (6-3, 6-3) and Morzan fell in a hard-fought match to Mitchell (2-6, 6-4, 7-6, (4)).
??We competed well in spots,?? said head coach Buffy Baker. ??(Sasha) Abraham and (Lauren) McCarthy played well when they needed to, and (Dorothy) Dohanics and (Jenny) Shular battled hard in singles. However, we still need to compete at a higher level. We have a bitter taste in our mouths which will lead us in to competition next weekend.??
The Nittany Lions will face Florida International and # 32 NC State in Raleigh, North Carolina, next Friday and Saturday. Play begins at 10 a.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The team will be back at home during the weekend of February 16 to face Syracuse and West Virginia.
