UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 15, 2007 ?C After traveling for two consecutive weekends, the Penn State women??s tennis team (1-4) returns home this weekend to host the Syracuse Orange and the West Virginia Mountaineers. PSU??s match with Syracuse will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by a noon start against WVU on Saturday.
The Nittany Lions are coming off of their first win of the spring season against Temple on Friday, February 9, at Princeton. Senior Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India), freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.), sophomore Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Georgia) all assisted Penn State in clinching the doubles point and ultimately giving the Nittany Lions the ??W??. On February 10, PSU dropped a heartbreaker to Princeton (4-3). Senior Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec), Holzberg and sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) topped their opponents in singles.
Head coach Buffy Baker is thrilled to be back on home turf after journeying to North Carolina during the first weekend in February and Princeton last weekend.
??It will be nice to be back home for the rest of the month,?? said Baker. ??We are coming off a tough loss to Princeton that will help fuel us to improve in areas that we need to address.??
Following this weekend??s matches, Penn State will open the Big Ten slate against #6 Northwestern at home on Saturday, February 24 at 5 p.m. All home matches are played at Sarni Indoor Tennis Center, located off of Bigler Road, and admission is free.
