UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 22, 2007 ?C After two back-to-back wins last weekend versus Syracuse and West Virginia, the Penn State Women??s Tennis Team (3-4) hopes to continue their win streak Saturday when they host the #6 Northwestern Wildcats to open their Big Ten season. The match will take place at the Indoor Tennis Center, admission free and pizza will be served to all fans in attendance.
Following two weeks on the road, Penn State returned home to top the Syracuse Orange on February 16 by a 6-1 margin and maintained their success the following day, defeating the West Virginia Mountaineers, 6-. Against the Orange, sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Carolina Huignard, while freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) had a calm presence on the court with her 6-1, 7-5 win over Chelsea Jones. In sixth singles, freshman Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) beat Anne Magellan in a pair of 6-1 sets. The Nittany Lions swept doubles both days, something they had yet to do this season.
??We are looking forward to our evening showdown with the Wildcats,?? said head coach Buffy Baker. ??A Big Ten opener at home against a top-ranked team in the country has the making for a heated battle, and we will be ready.??
Following this weekend??s action, Penn State will travel to Huntington, W.Va., to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd and the Middle Tennessee State Blue Hens. Action begins Friday, March 2, at 3 p.m. PSU will return home Friday, March 9, to defend their home court against Wisconsin at 5 p.m.
