Nittany Lions Notch First Big Ten Win


Junior Jenny Shular led the Nittany Lions in their first Big Ten win over Wisconsin (5-2) on Friday. PSU will be back in action next Sunday, March 18, to take on Toledo and Lehigh. Play begins at 10 a.m. at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center off of Bigler Road, and admission is free.

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.; March 9, 2007 ?C The Penn State women??s tennis team (5-6, 1-1) claimed their first Big Ten win of the season Friday, proving that they were hungry for the ??W?? against the Wisconsin Badgers in a 5-2 performance.

The Nittany Lions came out strong in doubles and never looked back. Senior Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) and sophomore Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) began the day, topping Kaylan Caiati and Elizabeth Carpenter (8-6). Freshman Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Canada) and junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) continued the success for the blue and white, defeating Nicole Beck and #20 Caitlin Burke (8-4), while sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) beat Morgan Tuttle and Chelsea Nusslock (8-3).

In singles, Penn State started out a bit rusty, but picked up the slack later in the day to secure their win against the Badgers. Senior Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec) fell to Caiati (6-2, 6-1) and Abraham came up short against Carpenter (6-2, 6-4). Holzberg started the PSU rally as she came out strong against Nusslock, posting a 6-3, 6-0 win. Shular earned her ??W?? against Erin Jobe, defeating her in a pair of 6-1 sets. Dohanics prolonged the Nittany Lion??s triumph, beating Tuttle in three sets (6-1, 1-6, 6-1), while McCarthy defeated Kim Roberts in a three-set thriller (7-4, 4-6, 6-1).

??It is nice to have our first Big Ten win under our belts,?? said head coach Buffy Baker. ??This was a great way to end the first half of our spring season. The girls will have four days off, and then we will get back to preparing for our next opponents.??
