Nine Members of Men?' Swimming & Diving Team Qualify for NCAA Championships


Mike Alderman will be joined by eight swimmers at next weekend's NCAA Championships, the most representatives for Penn State at the national meet since 2002.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; March 10, 2007 ?C Eight members of the men??s swimming team and one diver will swim and dive at next weekend??s NCAA Championships. The nine total members is the most for Penn State since 10 went to NCAAs during the 2001-02 season and the nine is also the second-most to qualify under head coach Bill Dorenkott, who was in his first year as coach of the men??s team in the 2001-02 season.

This year will also mark the first time in four years that swimmers from Penn State have qualified for NCAAs. For the last two years, it was only divers that represented and scored points for Penn State at the national meet. This group of eight swimmers will be the first since Eugene Botes swam in the 2003 championships.

All eight swimmers will be making their first career appearances at the national meet, while diver Mike Alderman (Arlington, Va.) will close out his career with his second appearance at NCAAs after he won the one-meter springboard title at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships last weekend.

Swimmers advancing to NCAAs include Sean Biedermann, (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Dan Kaiserian, (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) Kyle Miranda, (Louisville, Colo.) Vincent Reydams, (Falls Church, Va.) Pat Schirk, (Pottstown, Pa.) Chris Sullivan, (Naples, Fla.) Sean Swanepoel (Lincoln Mead, South Africa) and Tim Williams (North Bend, Ohio). Schirk qualified automatically with ??A?? qualifying times in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. The other seven swimmers qualified with ??B?? provisional times.

Next weekends NCAA Championships will take place at Minnesota from Thursday-Saturday, March 15-17.
