UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; March 14, 2007 - Nine members of the Penn State men's swimming and diving team, the most since the 2002 season, will travel to the NCAA Championships this weekend, which will be hosted by Minnesota. The nine is the second most under head coach Bill Dorenkott.
Eight of the nine-member contingent -- all eight swimmers -- will be making their first appearances at NCAAs, while diver Mike Alderman will be making his second career appearance.
Backstroker Pat Schirk enters the championships while in the middle of a stretch that has seen him do some of the best swimming of his career. Schirk finished second in the 200 back and fifth in the 100 back at Big Ten's last month, setting new school records in both events. He was also on the 400 medley relay team that set a new school record at Big Ten's. Schirk will swim in all three of those events at NCAAs and is seeded the highest of any Penn State swimmer at these championships, fourth in the 200 back and fifth in the 100 back.
After Schirk's seeds, the next highest seed for Penn State is that of the 400 freestyle relay team, which is seeded eighth. In addition to the 400 medley and the 400 free relay teams, the Nittany Lion 200 free relay team will also swim at the national meet.
Penn State's nine total representatives at the NCAA meet is the fourth-most among Big Ten schools, despite finishing seventh at the Big Ten meet last month.
