Women?' Tennis Extends Winning Streak to Four Matches

Freshman Sarah Lotto and the Nittany Lions topped Toledo and Lehigh Sunday to extend their winning streak to four matches. PSU will take on the Michigan Wolverines Friday, March 23, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center. Admission is free, and pizza will be served to all fans.


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; March 18, 2007 ?C The Penn State women??s tennis team (7-6, 1-1) extended its winning streak to four matches after posting wins over the Toledo Rockets, 6-1, and the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 7-0, Sunday at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center. The two wins move the Nittany Lions?? overall record to 7-6 on the season.

The Nittany Lions wasted no time picking up their first point of the day against the Rockets in doubles action as senior Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) and sophomore Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) topped Martina Wodzinski and Maha Guirguis, 8-3, while junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and freshman Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Canada) defeated Myriam Cueva and Nadia Zoubareva in a thriller, 8-7 (1). Wrapping up doubles against Toledo were sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.), who defeated Jenny Belsky and Jessica Azoulay, 8-3.

The lone loss on the day for the Nittany Lions came in singles against Toledo, when senior Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec) fell in a hard-fought match to Cueva (7-6 (4), 7-5). From there, Penn State controlled the board, with Abraham topping Wodzinski 6-0, 6-0 in second singles and Holzberg beating Guirguis 6-2, 6-4 in third singles action. Continuing the success was Shular, who defeated Zoubareva in a pair of 6-2 matches in the fourth slot, while Dohanics had a strong hand against Belsky in a 6-1, 6-2 fifth singles win. McCarthy came out strong against Azoulay, capturing the sixth singles ??W?? with a 6-1, 6-0 match.

Penn State continued their achievements against Lehigh in the afternoon, sweeping the Mountain Hawks in both singles and doubles. Niculescu began the match against Gwen Dwyer, topping her 6-0, 6-1, while Holzberg defeated Alexis Jacobi (6-0, 6-3). Shular beat Allison Schwartz in straight-sets (6-1, 6-0), while Dohanics picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory for the blue and white over Julie Arthofer. Finishing singles on the day for the Nittany Lions was McCarthy, who defeated Francesca Murasko-Blank by a (6-1, 6-4) margin, while sophomore Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) picked up her first win of the day with a 6-1, 6-3 sixth single victory over Ruthie Furman.

In doubles action against the Mountain Hawks, Holzberg and Abraham topped Dwyer and Schwartz (8-1), while Shular and Lotto defeated Murasko-Blank and Jacobi (8-0). The last match of the day was won by McCarthy and Dohanics, who defeated Arthofer and Victoria Vityuk (8-1).

Head coach Buffy Baker was pleased with the way her team triumphed in their first doubleheader of the spring season. ??It was great to get these extra matches in before we continue with our Big Ten play,?? said Baker. ??We have a big match against Michigan coming up next weekend, and we hope our momentum will help us throughout the spring.??
