Women?' Tennis Falls to No. 30 Wolverines 5-2


Sophomore Dorothy Dohanics and the Nittany Lions fell 5-2 to No. 30 Michigan Friday at home. Penn State will look to rebound next weekend when they host Iowa on Friday, March 30 at 5 p.m. and Minnesota on Sunday, April 1 at 11 a.m. All action will take place at the Sarni Tennis Center, and admission is free.

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.; March 23, 2007 ?C The Penn State women??s tennis team (7-7, 1-2) had its four-match winning streak snapped in a tough 5-2 loss to the No.30 Michigan Wolverines at the PSU Indoor Tennis Center on Friday.

The Nittany Lions fell behind early as the Wolverines picked up the doubles point, despite an 8-6 win for sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) in third doubles. The Wolverines earned their doubles point with a win from Jenny Kuehn and Chisako Sugiyama, who topped sophomore Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India), 8-4, while Kara Delicata and Tania Mahtani beat freshman Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.), 8-3.

Michigan moved out to a 3-0 lead as their two nationally-ranked players took the court. No. 87 Sugiyama topped senior Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec) in a pair of 6-2 matches, while No. 69 Kuehn defeated senior Abraham in straight sets (6-1, 6-0). Also in singles, Delicata beat Holzberg 6-1, 6-2, while Mahtani defeated Shular (4-6, 6-1, 6-0). Grabbing the ??W?? for the Nittany Lions was Dohanics, who topped Elizabeth Exon (6-2, 4-6, 10-7) and McCarthy, who defeated Allie Shafner (6-1, 6-3).

??I was very disappointed with how we competed in doubles,?? said head coach Buffy Baker. ??We were scared and nervous, and just never recovered from those emotions throughout the night.??

The Nittany Lions will get the opportunity to rebound with two Big Ten matches next weekend. Penn State will host Iowa on Friday, March 30 at 5 p.m., followed by Minnesota Sunday, April 1 at 11 a.m. All matches take place at the Sarni Tennis Center, and admission is free.
