Women?' Tennis Hosts Iowa and Minnesota

Freshman Lauren McCarthy and the women's tennis team will look to upset No. 59 Iowa and No. 53 Minnesota this weekend at Sarni Tennis Center. The Nittany Lions will battle the Hawkeyes at 5 p.m. Friday, March 30 and the Golden Gophers Sunday, April 1 at 11 a.m. Admission is free.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; March 29, 2007 ?C After a disappointing loss last weekend to No. 30 Michigan, the Penn State women??s tennis team (7-6, 1-1 Big Ten) will look to get back on the winning track this weekend against No. 59 Iowa on Friday, March 30 at 5 p.m. and No. 53 Minnesota Sunday, April 1 at 11 a.m. All action will take place at the Sarni Tennis Center off of Bigler Road, and admission is free.

The Wolverines came into University Park ready to fight and proved to be too much for the Nittany Lions, defeating PSU by a 5-2 margin. Sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) posted a fifth singles win over Elizabeth Exon (6-2, 4-6, 10-7), while freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) topped Allie Shafner in the sixth singles slot (6-1, 6-3). Dohanics and McCarthy also faired well in doubles, pairing up to beat Exon and Shafner (8-6).

The Hawkeyes are currently 6-7 on the season, including 2-1 in the Big Ten, most recently shutting out Ohio State Sunday. The Golden Gophers are 7-7 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten, falling to Indiana in a 4-3 match on Sunday.

Following this weekend??s matches, the Nittany Lions will hit the road to take on Illinois on Saturday, April 7 and Purdue Sunday, April 8, both at 11 a.m. Penn State will return to University Park for their final home match on Saturday, April 14 when they host Michigan State at 11 a.m.
