Women?' Tennis Travels to Midwest

Senior Andreea Niculescu and the Nittany Lions will travel to the midwest this weekend to take on Illinois on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Purdue Easter Sunday at 11 a.m. The team will return home next Saturday, April 14, for their final home match of the season against Michigan State at 11 a.m. at the Sarni Tennis Center, and admission is free.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 5, 2007 ?C After two back-to-back heart-breaking losses to two nationally-ranked Big Ten teams last weekend at home, the Penn State women??s tennis team (7-9, 1-4) will take their determination on the road as they head to the midwest to face the Illinois Fighting Illini and the No. 50 Purdue Boilermakers. The Nittany Lions will play at 11 a.m. Saturday in Champaign, Illinois and then travel to West Lafayette, Indiana for an 11 a.m. start on Easter Sunday with Purdue.

Penn State is coming off of a 5-2 loss to No. 59 Iowa Friday, followed by a 4-3 loss to No. 53 Minnesota Sunday. Highlighting the weekend for the Nittany Lions was freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.), who topped Golden Gopher Karina Chiarelli (5-7, 6-3, 6-2) and teamed up with sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) to defeat Chaiarelli and Danielle Mousseau, 9-7 in doubles. Junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) also grabbed a ??W?? for the Blue and White, beating Minnesota??s Lindsay Risebrough (6-3, 6-4), while sophomore Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) topped Mousseau (6-4, 6-2).

The Fighting Illini (5-10, 1-3) are coming off of their first Big Ten win of the season, topping Wisconsin 4-3 in Madison Sunday. The Purdue Boilermakers (10-4, 3-1) recently fell 6-1 to No. 2 Notre Dame. Following this weekend??s action, Penn State will return home for its final home match of the season when the Nittany Lions face the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m at the Sarni Tennis Center off of Bigler Road, and admission is free.
