UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 11, 2007?C Senior Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) has earned the Big Ten Player of the Week Award for her performance last weekend against Illinois and No. 46 Purdue. Abraham is just the second player in women??s tennis history to earn Big Ten weekly/monthly honors.
Abraham, who is PSU??s first Player of the Week since Leigh Ann Merryman on March 17, 2004, succeeded in both singles and doubles against both Midwest opponents. In Champaign, Ill., on April 7, Abraham defeated Momei Qu 6-3, 6-2 in the second singles spot and then teamed up with junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) to top Shivani Dave and Alejandra MezaCuadra, 8-1 in doubles action. The following day, in the Nittany Lions?? near upset of the nationally-ranked Boilermakers, Abraham beat Brooke Beier in a thrilling 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 match. She and Shular also topped Neela Vaez and Cigdem Duru (8-5) in 2nd doubles.
Abraham is 9-17 overall in singles this season and 16-14 in doubles with five different partners. Abraham primarily plays in the second singles position for the Nittany Lions. Abraham and Shular have won their last three matches together in doubles play.
Abraham and the rest of the Nittany Lions will look to continue their successful spring season this weekend when they host Michigan State for their final home match of the season on Saturday, April 14 at 11 a.m. at the Sarni Tennis Center off of Bigler Road, and admission is free.
