ANN ARBOR, Mich.; May 22, 2007 - The Penn State baseball team will make its first appearance at the Big Ten Tournament under head coach Robbie Wine and its first appearance since the 2004 season this year as the Nittany Lions begin play on Wednesday against Ohio State at 3:35 p.m.

Penn State finished in a tie for second place in the Big Ten, tied for its second-best finish in the Big Ten standings ever with the 2000 club, which also finished second, behind only the championship team of 1996. The Nittany Lions are seeded third, having clinched a berth in the Big Ten Tournament during its series win over Michigan two weekends ago.

Ohio State slipped into the tournament on the last day of the season on Sunday with its win over the Nittany Lions in their series finale. Penn State won the first three games of that series for its first series win over the Buckeyes since the 1996 season.

The Nittany Lions are expected to send Bellefonte, Pa. native Seth Whitehill to the mound on Wednesday. Whitehill also threw on Friday, going seven innings and allowing just four hits and two runs as Penn State won the series opener in 10 innings. Wednesday's game will be preceded by the first game of the tournament, which will pit No. 4 seed Iowa against No. 5 seed Illinois. The highest-seeded winner of the two games on Wednesday will move on to play the No. 2 seed Minnesota on Thursday, while the lowest-seeded winner will play the host and No. 1 seed Michigan. The losers of tomorrow's two games will also play an elimination game on Thursday.
