Boston, Mass. - The Penn State men's golf team posted a third-round score of 293 - the lowest third-round team score of the 13-team field - but only gained one stroke on eventual-champion Old Dominion, finishing in second place at the Hartford Hawks Invitational.
The Nittany Lions trailed Old Dominion by seven strokes entering the final round, but Old Dominion held on, firing a 294 to win the 54-hole tournament by six strokes. Old Dominion posted rounds of 288-290-294=872 (+8) while Penn State shot rounds of 292-293-293=878 (+14). Host team Hartford tied for fourth place at +36 (900).
No Penn State golfer finished lower than 17th place in a field of 67 players. The tournament was held on the 6,944-yard, par-72 Oaks Course at the International Golf Club in Boston, Mass.
Redshirt freshman T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) and senior Robert Rohanna (Waynesburg, Pa.) led Penn State individually, both tying for seventh place at four-over par. Howe, appearing in his first collegiate tournament, fired rounds of 76-70-74 (220) while Rohanna shot rounds of 71-77-72 (220).
Rohanna, a 2007 All-Big Ten Conference first-team selection, finished the final round at even-par 72, tied for fourth best round of the day. His top-10 finish was the 14th of his collegiate career.
Senior Harvin Groft (State College, Pa.) tied for 10th place at five-over par after posting rounds of 71-76-74 (221). Sophomore Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.), last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year, and sophomore Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.) both tied for 17th place at eight-over par (224)
