UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Men's tennis player Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) and women's soccer's Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) have been selected as Penn State's Student-Athletes of the Week. Lynch scored four wins in singles action at the UVA Fall Tennis Classic including winning the White flight singles crown, while Schoepfer scored the game-winning goal on Friday vs. James Madison and the game-tying goal on Sunday vs. No. 5 Texas A&M.
As the Male Student-Athlete of the Week Lynch, the No. 4 seed in the 16-player White singles draw, notched four consecutive straight-set victories. The former No. 1 ranked junior in the Mid-Atlantic Region for boy's 16s, knocked off Penn's Justin Fox by a score of 6-3, 6-1 and Duke's Alex Stone by a score of 6-4, 6-2 in the first two rounds.
As the match continued, Lynch knocked off the No. 1 seed of the white draw Alexander Ermakov of Harvard by a score of 6-3, 6-4, before beating Penn State Freshman Eddie Bourchier in the finals 6-4, 6-2.
Schoepfer's early goal in the second half of the Nittany Lions' tilt vs. James Madison was all the Nittany Lions needed for a 1-0 victory on Friday at Jeffrey Field. Heading into the game, the Dukes were undefeated at 5-0.
On Sunday, the 2006 Big Ten All-Freshman team member scored the game-tying goal against No. 5 Texas A&M by poking her own rebound into space and sending it home before the Aggies' defense could recover.
In a game watched by the fourth largest crowd in Nittany Lion women's soccer history as well as a national TV audience, Schoepfer took a team-high nine shots on the day and was without question the Nittany Lions' biggest threat.
