UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State sophomore Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) was named to this week's Soccer America Team of the Week. Schoepfer is a recipient after her offensive performance for women's soccer (3-2-1, 0-0) against James Madison on Friday in the Nittany Lions' 1-0 win and vs. No. 5 Texas A&M Sunday in No. 17 PSU's 1-1 tie. The honor comes after she earned Big Ten Player of the Week earlier this week.
Schoepfer scored the game-winning goal against James Madison early in the soggy second half Friday, which was all Penn State needed to record the win. The No. 5 Aggies thought they had the upper hand Sunday, with the 1-0 lead for much of the game. Schoepfer, however, had nine shots on goal and scored the game-tying blast after sending in her own rebound in with less than five minutes to go.
The forward now has a total of 22 shots this season with two goals, both this past weekend. Schoepfer is coming off a stellar freshman year, being named to the 2006 Big Ten All-Freshman team and leading the team in shots with 76. Schoepfer scored the game-winner in two contests during her freshman campaign against Harvard (9/15) and Ohio State (10-15).
Schoepfer and the Nittany Lions travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to face Bucknell Wednesday at 7 p.m. before heading to South Bend, Ind. Sunday for a 12:30 p.m. start live on ESPNU vs. 2006 national runner-up Notre Dame.
