Matches with seven teams ranked in the final CSTV/AVCA Division I-II Top 15 poll highlight the 2008 Penn State men's volleyball schedule.
From the final poll, the sixth-ranked Nittany Lions will play IPFW (No. 3), UCLA (No. 7), Ohio State (No. 9), Hawaii (No. 10), Loyola-Chicago (No. 11), Ball State (No. 13) and Long Beach State (No. 14), while also facing several regional and conference foes throughout the season.
"Our 2008 schedule will give us the opportunity to face some of the top competition in the NCAA as we meet tough opponents at the Outrigger Invitational, the Long Beach Active Ankle Beach Bach and our home-and-homes with the top powers in the MIVA," said head coach Mark Pavlik, who begins his 14th season in Happy Valley. "We will be put in tough positions playing against some very good teams in their own gyms, which should help prepare us for the playoffs."
Penn State opens the season on the road at the Outrigger Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii, taking on the host Warriors, UCLA and Ball State Thursday-Saturday, Jan. 3-5. The Nittany Lions open their home schedule the following weekend at home, hosting Lewis on Friday, Jan. 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Rec Hall.
This season's spring trip features another journey west to face Cal Baptist and Long Beach State at the Long Beach Active Ankle Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15 in Long Beach, Calif.
The Nittany Lions will take on their traditional Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Tait division schedule, which includes both home and away match-ups with St. Francis, Princeton, Juniata, George Mason, NJIT and East Stroudsburg. Penn State will also have home-and-home series with MIVA opponents Ohio State, IPFW, Ball State and Loyola-Chicago.
The EIVA Quarterfinals will be held on Saturday, April 19, with the top two seeds earning a bye, before the EIVA Semifinals and Championship will be held on Thursday and Saturday, April 24 and 26 on the campus of the top seed.
UC Irvine will host the 2008 National Collegiate Championship on Thursday and Saturday, May 1 and 3 at the Bren Center in Irvine, Calif.
While not part of the traditional season, Penn State will also host Southern California for two exhibition matches on Friday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. ET at Rec Hall.
