TULSA, Okla. - Senior Michael James (Clifton, Va.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation draw at the ITA Polo Ralph Lauren All American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla., with a straight sets victory on Friday.
In the Round of 16 in the consolation draw, James, who is ranked a career-high 35th in the ITA national rankings, battled Florida State's Sam Chang. James took the first set by a 6-3 margin. Chang, who qualified for the main draw on Wednesday after scoring three victories in preliminary play, had nothing for James in the second, as the Nittany Lion senior advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4 victory.
James will take on Georgia's Nate Schnugg in the quarterfinals of the consolation draw on Saturday. Schnugg is currently ranked 58th in the nation.
James and junior Adam Slagter (Austin, Texas) fell to fourth-ranked Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala from Texas in the consolation doubles draw on Friday. Kutrovsky and Zavala ousted the Nittany Lion duo by a score of 8-4.
