TULSA, Okla. - Senior Michael James (Clifton, Va.) had his strong run in the consolation draw come to a close on Saturday at the ITA Polo Ralph Lauren All American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla., after suffering a three-set defeat.
James, who is ranked 35th in the ITA national singles rankings, took on Georgia's Nate Schnugg in the quarterfinals of the consolation draw. James took a close first set, 7-5, against Schnugg, who is currently ranked 58th in the nation. However, the talented player from Georgia came storming back in the second (6-1) to knot the match at one set each. The third set proved to be a battle. James and Schnugg moved into a tiebreaker with the score knotted at six. Schnugg edged James in the breaker, 9-7, to move on to the semifinals of the consolation draw.
James falls to 8-3 on the season. Despite the loss, James gained valuable experience battling some of the nation's elite players in Tulsa.
The Nittany Lion tennis team will next travel to the ITA Northeast Regional Championships in Princeton, N.J. The tournament will run from Oct. 18-23 on the campus of Princeton University.
